gclid vs. UTM: which one wins in GA4
Updated by the UTM Builder team at Limner.
gclid does. Google Ads help says that in GA4, auto-tagging takes priority over manual tagging because there is no override option. The Universal Analytics checkbox that let manual UTMs win no longer exists.
What changes in your reports
When gclid works, source, medium and campaign come from Google Ads. A manual UTM with utm_medium=display or a different campaign name doesn’t change anything in those dimensions. The exception is the detail: utm_content and utm_term still go to Manual ad content and Manual term.
When the UTM is used
GA4 help explains that when gclid can’t be used as expected and there is any UTM parameter in the URL, GA4 takes all traffic-source values exclusively from the UTM. That’s why Google recommends setting all relevant parameters, especially utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_id and utm_source_platform. Anything missing becomes (not set).
Situations where gclid fails:
- Google Ads and GA4 aren’t linked. Traffic from an unlinked account shows up as (not set) in the Google Ads reports.
- A redirect that drops the parameter. Google Ads requires the gclid to reach the final landing page.
- A site that rejects parameters. Google Ads warns that a small percentage of sites show an error page with auto-tagging and recommends testing by clicking your ad.
Setup without conflicts
- Keep auto-tagging on and link Google Ads and GA4.
- If another tool needs UTMs, such as a CRM or a spreadsheet, put them in the Final URL suffix, with values consistent with the channel:
utm_source=googleandutm_medium=cpc. - Use ValueTrack parameters so you don’t type values by hand, such as
utm_id={campaignid}. Keep in mind that{keyword}comes back blank in Performance Max and Dynamic Search Ads. - An account, campaign or ad group tracking template must include
{lpurl}. Without it, Google says, the landing page URL gets corrupted.
utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign={_camp}&utm_id={campaignid}&utm_term={keyword}&utm_content={creative}
What about Meta, TikTok and the rest?
GA4 help describes auto-tagging only for Google products: Google Ads, Campaign Manager 360, Display & Video 360 and Search Ads 360. On other platforms, the UTM is what GA4 reads, so there it has to be complete and consistent.
