WhatsApp lead source: what you can and can’t measure
Updated by the UTM Builder team at Limner.
The source gets lost at the click because the WhatsApp link doesn’t carry UTMs. You can measure part of the path, and it’s better to know which part before you promise a sales-by-ad report.
What a wa.me link carries
WhatsApp’s Help Center documents two pieces of data in a click-to-chat link: the phone number, in the address, and the pre-filled message, in the text parameter. No other parameter is documented. A utm_source tacked onto the end of a wa.me link doesn’t reach the business or GA4, which doesn’t run inside the app.
Not even WhatsApp’s official QR codes and short links come with numbers: Meta says it doesn’t provide analytics for them, because it limits the data it logs to protect privacy.
What you can measure
- Clicks on the button on your site. A GA4 event shows how many button clicks came from each campaign, because the site visit has UTMs. A click isn’t a conversation: the person can open the app and not send anything.
- A code in the pre-filled message. A text like “Hi, I came from the ad [code ig-0610]” identifies the source when the person sends the message without deleting it. They can edit or delete the text, so some conversations arrive without a code.
- Click-to-WhatsApp ads. If you use the official API (Cloud API, directly or through a provider), your webhook receives a
referralobject with the ad ID and the click IDctwa_clid. Meta documents that it only comes when the message starts from a click-to-WhatsApp ad. - Ads Manager. The Messaging conversations started metric counts accounts that sent a message for the first time or after at least seven days without a conversation, attributed to your ads. That’s why it’s usually higher than the number of leads the team sees as new.
What you can’t measure
- Whether the message was sent after a click on a regular wa.me link, without an integration that receives the messages.
- The source of people who arrive through the bio link, a QR code or a Google ad:
referralis only for click-to-WhatsApp ads. - A sale closed in the chat, unless someone logs it in the CRM or an integration flags it.
- Anything in the free WhatsApp Business app beyond the ads summary: it has no webhook.
Where UTMs still work
In the other direction. Every link to your site that you send inside WhatsApp, in a broadcast list, a Status or a support chat, can and should have UTMs. Without them, those visits tend to show up as (direct) / (none). Always use the same source and the same medium. With utm_source=whatsapp, GA4 already puts those visits in Organic Social, because Google lists whatsapp as a social source; a WhatsApp channel in a custom channel group lets you see them separately.
